 "The most famous garden designer no one has ever heard of"

I am a fan of the idea of the garden being about the place you are in and not about the designer. The use of formal designer with a borrowed landscape is appealing to me. I find it orderly and nourishing on the eye. The step down of the terraces at Villa Silvio is very attractive and gives a great perspective of the terraces and the layers of trees beyond.

The same view many years earlier shows the initial view from the upper terrace. The Cypress tress framing the view over the plain below. The pond offers an interesting reflective view of the sky and planting. I think the formality being broken by the landscape and trees beyond the terraces adds to the appeal.
